Updated on January 16, 2013

This lens is created for the Badminton Enthusiasts

Badminton for me is one of the greatest sport ever created by humans. You can play it with your friends to the streets, because this game doesn't require a lot. Just buy a badminton Racket, shuttlecock, invite friends and hualla!!! you can now play badminton...

The good news is that this game can make you burn 350-750 calories just by playing... Now you know why badminton players are skinny. It's a great game for the persons who wanted to lose weight but too lazy going to gym.

It is also recommended for persons with poor eyesight and hyper active kids...

But this game is never that easy as it looks, when you just play without performing the basic steps on how and do some minor guidelines.. Ouchee!!! back aches the other day. or worst injuries and cramps may occur...

First let me show you

This clip is taken from a very wonderful rally on a professional badminton game

History, Existence and Developments

It is said that this game was invented in the ancient Greece, derived from the child's game battledore and shuttlecock, where two persons will hit a feathered shuttlecock using a long thin racket.

The Indians call this game "Poonai" in the 18th century while the British officers who stationed in India were the ones who brought the game in England, introduced it to their friends, introduce some rules and developed some equipments.

This game was officially launched in 1873 at the Badminton House, Gloucestershire. During that time, the game was referred to as "The Game of Badminton," to where the official name "Badminton" was derived.

1992 is the year that Badminton became an Olympic Sport.

Badminton Court Dimension and other details
Badminton Court Dimension and other details

Court Dimension

The court is rectangular and divided into halves by a net. Courts are usually marked for both singles and doubles play. The doubles suite is wider than the singles court, but both are the same length. The exception, which often causes confusion to newer players, is that the doubles suite has a shorter serve-length dimension.

Here is the summarized sizes of the court:

Full width of the court : 6.1 meters ( 20 ft )

singles: 5.18 meters ( 17 ft )

Full length of the court: 13.4 meters (44 ft )

Service line distance

singles: 1.98 meters ( 6 ft )

doubles: .78 meters (2.6 ft )

The NET height is usually 5 foot 2 inches from pole to top.

Scoring

The minimum point that a winning player must achieve is twenty one (21), unless theres a deuce. It is best of three ( 3 ) series.

Deuce occurs when 20-20 is the point , order to win a deuce one must score 2 points ahead to the opponent (ie, 21-23), maximum score is 30-29 (30 is the winning score).

Rally point is the scoring system, meaning every fault counts.

Badminton Rackets and shuttle cock

Badminton Rackets are light usually 80-90 grams of weight, its is made out of light metals such as aluminum. the strings are usually made-out of carbon criss-crossed together for added strength to stand hard smash.

For badminton rackets, I really recommend Yonex Brand, because it is light, strong and can stand extreme pressure and extreme smash. This badminton racket brand is recommended by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

The shuttle cock is a a conical shape material made out of feathers and rounded cork covered with rubber.

Rubber Shoes

Because of the rapid movement when playing badminton, experts usually recommend non-bulky to semi-bulky, light weight and sole-grip shoes.

Shoes must be created to support sudden change of feet movement and can withstand extreme pressure.

Tips and Trick

Here are the Tips and Tricks that I can Share with you guys:

Stock your Reserves

Stamina is one of the key, when we are tired that is the time that we commit mistakes and unable to think well and fast, we loose our focus and loose the game.

If you have lots of stamina you have coordination and you can keep yourself calm and be able to do something on the game.

“My players also got tired but they have no choice, they have to exceed their limits.

- Coach Misbun Sidek of Malaysia”

My coach, when I was in college will always ask us to eat bananas 2 hours before the game as potassium can increase energy. Working out and staying fit are very big factors for you to stay in the game, with lots of energy.

Smash and half smash must come in the right time, you can do it by means of controlling your arm.

Master the art of manipulating the racket can help you to create various shots, learn how to loosen or tighten your grip in different situations.

Practicing various shots can also make you familiar with different variations of attacks, in the actual game you are confident enough and the things you have done in the practice comes out naturally.

Run when getting the ball forward and side-step when getting the ball backward and side-ward.

Learn the Art of Puppetry

...Learning the art of Badminton Puppetry is equals to you manipulating your opponent.

While you were watching a professional game, you can see that both players were running back and forth and each player is trying to outsmart each other.

Good control in the game can make you win, yeah it is kinda feels good when we smashed a ball and earn a point but for you to be able to do that you must have to find an opening then strike.

There is what I call a zigzag hit. Start with a drop on the upper left part of the opponent's court. When the opponent manages to hit the ball back, return the ball to his right lower court to make running. If he is still successful in returning the ball bring the ball on his upper right court, then, to the left lower court. Repeat the steps and when there's an opening smash the ball there.

Staying Focused

When you hit the ball and hear a steal meaning that you have mistimed hit, learn to be calm and stay alert.

“Don't shuffle your feet but opt for longer strides

- Men's Health Magazine”

When your opponent makes lob be patient in approaching it and do it the right way. Do not think of the score and have presence of mind

The center of the court is the base position, always remain to that area.

Practical Tips and Trick

When Playing with your friends or even in a competition here are some tips that I can give you:

⋅Always perform warm-up exercises before playing to prevent injuries.

⋅Make sure that you are holding the racket in a relaxed hand shake position, it is the advised way.

⋅When your opponent is left handed, the area where it is hard for him to get the ball is in his upper right part, just make lots of drop there.

⋅If the opponent is tall hit the ball aiming his body.

⋅Right handed persons are having hard times hitting the ball near his left foot.

⋅Be prepared, focus on your opponent's body movement, it may give you an idea on where he will put the ball.

⋅Always estimate if the opponent's hit will go out or not.

⋅Cut shot works for me, you can do this by acting like you will hit the ball normally, but suddenly turn hand clockwise flipping the racket. That way the direction of the ball will suddenly change..

⋅Defense is better than offense.
